Juniper was one of the
ingredients in gin and gave it the distinctive flavour. Juniper acts as a diuretic and
increases the rate at which the kidneys filter body fluids.
Because of this diuretic
action, juniper is used to treat high blood pressure, fluid retention and premenstrual
syndrome. Juniper oil is thought to have anti-inflammatory effects, and is useful for
arthritis and gout sufferers.
How It May Benefit
Individuals with hay fever
should only take juniper under the supervision of a Health Professional. Juniper in
high doses can irritate and damage the kidneys and urinary tract. If you develop
diarrhoea, intestinal pain, kidney pain, blood in the urine, or a faster heartbeat, stop
taking juniper immediately and see your doctor as soon as possible. Do not use juniper if
you have a kidney infection, kidney stones or a history of kidney problems.
If you are pregnant - do
not use this herb.
Herbs should only be used under the supervision of an experienced
herbalist or naturopath experienced in herbs.
